Indian Staircase from Basecamp: Direct Trail Access Guide
Step-by-step trail guide from your cabin to Indian Staircase. Distance, difficulty, and route recommendations.

Indian Staircase offers some of Red River Gorge's most accessible quality climbing, with a direct trail connection from your basecamp. This guide covers the approach, routes, and local knowledge.
Trail Description
The Indian Staircase trail begins 50 yards from your cabin's front door, following a well-marked path through mature forest. The 0.3-mile approach takes 5-8 minutes with minimal elevation gain.
Area Overview
The climbing area features a long wall of high-quality sandstone with routes ranging from 5.7 to 5.12. The wall faces southeast, providing excellent conditions most of the year.
Recommended Routes
Beginners should try "Stairway to Heaven" (5.7) and "Step Right Up" (5.8). Intermediate climbers will enjoy "Indian Summer" (5.10a) and "Tomahawk" (5.10c).
Approach Details
From your cabin, follow the marked trail through mixed hardwood forest. The path is well-maintained with minimal technical sections. Approach shoes are recommended for the final rocky approach.
Seasonal Notes
The area climbs well spring through fall, with winter climbing possible on sunny days. Morning sun warms the wall quickly, while afternoon shade provides relief during summer.
Basecamp Advantages
The short approach allows multiple sessions per day, gear changes, and quick returns for meals or weather breaks. Your cabin's proximity makes this area ideal for skill development.
